Maximilian Sunflower

Helianthus maximiliani

About This Plant

Sun. A prairie perennial up to 10 feet tall, with a heavy crop of sunflowers from summer to late autumn. The stems are unbranched, and the folded leaves distinctly long and thin — up to 10 inches at the base. Maximilian is a good choice for poor clay soils, but like any sunflower it’s not terribly picky.

Origins: none

Maintenance

None required, although it’s better looking with water than in drought. Seed thinly to provide adequate spacing.

A cheery autumn sunflower. The seeds are a great food source for birds and wildlife.
