Candlestick Senna

Cassia alata

Candlestick Senna, Candlebrush, Talantala, Barajo

About This Plant

Sun. Candlestick is a big, fast-growing, tropical shrub — it grows annually in San Antonio (since, without sufficient protection, it dies to the ground in winter). Still, in a single summer it may grow to a surprisingly large size. Candlebrush is easily recognized by terminal clusters of cup-shaped golden flowers and pinnate, rounded leaves. Although it is often short lived, it self-sows freely and there are usually plenty of seedlings the next season. Candlebrush attracts butterflies and serves as a larval host for various sulphur butterflies.

Origins: Tropical Americas, Asia, and Africa

Maintenance

Candlestick grows swiftly to large size in a single growing season, but it rarely survives winter in Texas.
