About This Plant

Sun. The tiny reddish-orange flowers are open only when the sun shines, and fold with approaching rain. As the alternative names suggest, scarlet pimpernel is well-known for its ability to indicate both weather and time of day. The flowers open at around 8am each day, and close around 3pm. Scarlet pimpernel has been used as a cure-all and antidepressant in various folk medicines; however, it contains an estrogen mimic and bitter saponins, and may induce dermatitis.

Maintenance

Mow down after seeds have fallen.
