About This Plant
Dappled shade or morning sun. Evergreen, with feathery, threadlike leaves on tall, hollow stems. Umbrellas of tiny yellow flowers appear with warm weather. A soft-textured perennial in any herb garden, fennel adds an anise flavor to salad, sausage, and many dishes. Both the leaves and the seeds are edible. Fennel is a member of the carrot family, and closely related to many edible plants including carrot, parsley, dill, celery, and cilantro. “Bronze-leaf” varieties are available.
Maintenance
Fennel may appreciate some supplemental water in summer; typically it goes dormant during the dry season and returns with cooler weather. It can be cut back freely.
