About This Plant
Sun or light shade. Chard is a leafy green vegetable, often with neon-colored stalks. In Texas, it is used as an edible winter annual, often alongside ornamental plants thanks to its terrific looks. Depending on conditions, it may last all the way through summer. ‘Bright Lights’ is a popular cultivar.
The common name “Swiss chard” is of unknown origin, as the plant is Mediterranean — a clue to its heat tolerance in Texas.
