The SAWS WaterSaver Landscape and Patioscape coupons run concurrently to encourage homeowners to look at their landscapes as a whole. The coupons are offered in the spring and fall. Be sure you are signed up for our GardenStyleSA eNewsleter to be the first to know the release dates.
Get started in the planning process, take a look at your entire yard. How do the areas function? Are there areas of your yard no one ever uses? That may be the perfect spot to replace water-thirsty grass with drought-tolerant shrubs. If you have an area that is difficult to water, stop trying and put in an outdoor living area.
Next, look at your landscape during different times of the day to see where you get shade. If the area you have chosen for planting beds gets little or no shade you will want to choose plants that do well in full sun.
Another thing to consider is wildlife. If you would like to create a habitat for birds and butterflies choose plants that provide nectar, berries and shelter. The plant list will give you all the information you need to determine which plants offered will work for the landscape you want to create.
Measure Twice Plant Once
The final step to planning your new landscape is measuring out the beds or patio area and deciding on the shape you wish to create. Each coupon requires the removal of 200 square feet of grass and any automatic irrigation in the area. An example of a standard rectangular bed is 10 feet by 20 feet. To get an idea of what the bed or patio will look like layout your water hose in the shape you’re considering.
The SAWS WaterSaver Landscape Coupon and Patioscape Coupon will be available in March 2015. Visit GardenStyleSA.com for complete details.
